New Life For The Dennis Surname DNA Project

E-mail Print PDF
Genetic genealogy has become the premier research tool available to genealogists, and especially to those who have encountered the dreaded "brick wall." No other advancement in genealogical research has been able to tear down as many walls so quickly. As genetic technology advances and genetic genealogy becomes even more popular, its value as a research tool will also continue to grow. The secret to the success of any surname project is the size of the sample, or the number of participants. As the sample size increases, all test results become more valuable.

It's been just over a year and a half since the Dennis Surname DNA Project website first went live, and we've made some tremendous progress in that time. We've added a significant number of new members, and many have found new genetic and genealogical connections they would not have found otherwise. The new site design is part of an effort to not only continue our recent progress, but to elevate the project to entirely different level. There are several new features such as the News & Updates section, color coded Relationship Charts, and an entirely new look and feel...not to mention the new logo! It's my hope that the site's new design and layout along with it's added interactivity will generate some enthusiasm and garner new support for the project.

I plan to do everything I can to promote the project and add new members, but I need your help. I need you to promote and support the project in any way possible. For those who are able, we need donations to help build the general fund so that we have the funds available for those who are willing to be tested but unable financially. It's time for us, as Dennis researchers, to make the Dennis Surname DNA Project the success that it can and should be. Together we can make it one of the premier surname projects anywhere in the world.

I don't know if you all ever got a response about your question about a "coupon" to order a kit. If you click on the Family Tree DNA button at the upper right hand corner on this page under Join the Project, it takes you to the Dennis YDNA project website. You can order a kit there and they are at a discounted price since you are ordering through a project. Y-DNA testing: at least start with a 25 marker; but better yet, if possible, do the 37 marker or 67 marker test.

What coupon are you all referring to in your posts? I administer several other surname projects at Family Tree DNA; but have my uncle and a cousin in this Dennis project. Hopefully Jason will see your posts soon.

Quoting Rob Tennyson Glover:
Am considering paying for my son's DNA kit. How much is a coupon worth and how do I get one?

What's the answer?

I am interested in establishing any possible details of my ancestry. I am in South Africa. Have any DNA patriarchal groups been recognised here?

Have any of the Dennis' tested in either Family Finders (at FTDNA) or Relative Finders at 23andMe? The reason I am asking is that I show a match with a Dennis in a scan done at HIR project.

Has anyone tested that is a descendant of W.L. Dennis who was born in SC and lived in FL in 1860?

While browsing the internet, I came across a Dennis Family which details the Donnock Dennnis Family. It is not an active site at present, but its detail is phenomenol.

http://www.goldenlyon.com/dennis.html

The site was active during the period 1996-2000, with the last update as of 05 May 2000.

Enjoy!

Part 3: One family name that has "echoed" through the William Dennis (aka William Henderson Dennis per the Family Bible) is the name "Chesley/Chesly". Curiously, when researching the name which found its way to my Great Grandfather, Joseph Chesley Dennis, I find that was shared in lines prior. In reviewing the name "Chesley//Chesly", I found the majority of them in the New England area. More later.

Part 2 to Jason (not admin): I have researched the Dennis Line for 40+ years, and I have found "bread crumbs" that lead to the information I have now. I even discovered just recently a surviving female descendent is the grandchild of Granville and Milly Ann/Anna Lewis Dennis living in basically the same area of Arkansas the family moved into back in the 1860's. She is 98 years old, feisty as the day is long, and, without realizing it, she lives in a small place on the border of Arkansas and Louisiana. I hope to have the opportunity just to visit, but I asked her about info she would be willing to share family information and her reply was terse "No". The line I am from, most of whom are recently deceased, claim ignorance of details of the family tree, but have a "bullish" silence about their ancestors....again "bread crumbs", but I am happy even for the "smallest" of them. There seems to be a penchant in those Dennis member I have that idea of "leave it alone". More to come.
